The boys found their passion in building and racing bicycles. Fred opened a bicycle shop in Fred learned that racing his product brought interest and sales, and before he parted with two-wheelers he had established 2 world's records with his bikes. Intrigued with the internal comubstion engine, Fred and Augie built a small engine of their own design around 1900 and mounted it onto one of their bicycles. It was their first motorized vehicle and it was exhibited at a show inChicago. From that point on, their interests were diverted towards automobile production, and racing them. Their first car was marketed as "The Fastest and Strongest Two-Cylinder Car in the World."
