Frederick Samuel Duesenberg (1876-1932)and August Samuel Duesenberg (1879-1955) were raised on a farm near Rockford Iowa.  They were born in Lippe, Germany.  Their widowed mother brought them to the United States in 1885.

The boys found their passion in building and racing bicycles.  Fred opened a bicycle shop in Rockford and Augie the same in Garner.  The former site of Augie's  bicycle shop is 475 State Street in Garner.  This site currently is occupied by FPLE.

Fred learned that racing his product brought interest and sales, and before he parted with two-wheelers he had established 2 world's records with his bikes.  Intrigued with the internal comubstion engine, Fred and Augie built a small engine of their own design around 1900 and mounted it onto one of their bicycles.  It was their first motorized vehicle and it was exhibited at a show inChicago.

From that point on, their interests were diverted towards automobile production, and racing them.  Their first car was marketed as "The Fastest and Strongest Two-Cylinder Car in the World."
